The Archbishop John Njenga Foundation (AJNF) was registered on 10th August, 2023 and was formed to assist needy students who are unable to access affordable education. During his retirement, the late Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa was requested by members of the Archbishop John Njenga Club to give his blessings to the idea of establishing an education foundation in his honour. He keenly enquired of the purpose and goals of the foundation, and he was explained to that the sole aim was to assist needy students from humble background who could not afford paying for their education. He gave the go-ahead with the condition that “the foundation be set up for the purpose that it was intended”. The members of the Archbishop John Njenga Club have known “Mzee”, as the Archbishop was fondly known to them, for most of the entire period of their lives. From when he was a parish priest and Monsignor at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church at Makadara, Nairobi in the early 1960s to Eldoret when he was the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret in the 1970s and 1980s, to Mombasa when he was the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa in the late 1980s up to his retirement in 2005. Apart from paying for their education and well-being, he was present to baptize most them and their children, even officiating at their wedding ceremonies. Upon retirement at his home within the Queen of Apostles Seminary grounds at Ruaraka, Nairobi, the members and their families kept him company until he went to be with The Lord on Sunday morning, 4th November, 2018. In his memory and honour, this foundation has been set to give back to society for the welfare of those that are facing financial challenges to pay for their education.
